Confessions of a Dark Skin Woman

These are just a few instances that have occurred over the years in regards to my complexion. When I shared them with a guy I had dated more recently in my adulthood, (before making him sit through the hour-long documentary “Dark Girls”), his response was to brush off my concerns as being immature nonsense that happens while growing up. “Then why are there rarely strong, beautiful, darker skin women portrayed in our media? Why is the typical light skin woman the one on the videos or in the BET (Black Entertainment Television) rom com?” To that, he had no response. Because he knew. Our people are still ashamed.

I am realizing in this season how much my family culture has shaped my identity. One particular way… Continue reading Fly Girl

Just Another Day After Work

I’m currently sitting in Panera, awaiting the arrival of my soup and salad.  The perfect combination for an early fall evening.  Although it feels more like winter with the first visitation of snow making its way to Cleveland, Ohio.   So often I write about the past; recent life events that have had an impact… Continue reading Just Another Day After Work

Super Moms

She walked into our very professional business meeting, one kid on her hip, the other, hand-in-hand.  I was sitting attentively listening as the speaker effortlessly communicated the vast array of financial services we would be providing to our clients.  My trusty Mac at my feet, just in case I got the urge to type out… Continue reading Super Moms

Ready. Set. Leap…

I had this great epiphany today that I’m in transition.  For the last 6 months I’ve been growing out my relaxer and slowly joining the “natural hair movement”.  For the uniformed, this movement consists of African American women letting go of chemically processing their hair and opting to don their natural and coily locks.  In… Continue reading Ready.
