Confessions of a Dark Skin Woman

These are just a few instances that have occurred over the years in regards to my complexion. When I shared them with a guy I had dated more recently in my adulthood, (before making him sit through the hour-long documentary “Dark Girls”), his response was to brush off my concerns as being immature nonsense that happens while growing up. “Then why are there rarely strong, beautiful, darker skin women portrayed in our media? Why is the typical light skin woman the one on the videos or in the BET (Black Entertainment Television) rom com?” To that, he had no response. Because he knew. Our people are still ashamed.

Great News 😊

Yesterday something fantastic happened.  I got asked to be a regular contributor for a blog I highly esteem.  I have followed this blog for YEARS and in all honesty I felt their writers were “out of my league”.  They were (in my opinion) the cool kids of writing.  I actually was very nervous about the… Continue reading Great News 😊

Good Things in This Season

This weekend was a very good weekend. I took off Friday and though I had some running around to do I enjoyed a nice lunch alone at one of my favorite restaurants. I got to talk to some friends on the phone about an interview I had that day and was so blessed by how… Continue reading Good Things in This Season

A Glimpse Into My Day

I leave class 30 minutes early because I finished my practice tax return in record time.  The CPA teaching the class is impressed.  I’m just grateful.  Seeing as how I registered a month late for the class, I’m totally relying on Jesus for me to get up to speed on the material.  As usual He’s… Continue reading A Glimpse Into My Day

Fly Girl

It’s funny how you can be oblivious to certain things in your culture. You’ve grown up in it, been immersed in it since birth and are pretty immune to certain occurrences.  The same goes for family culture. I am realizing in this season how much my family culture has shaped my identity. One particular way… Continue reading Fly Girl

Well now, 2014 has been a whirlwind of very unexpected activity.  And as the winds blew, I eagerly raised my wings and sailed on every layer of exciting current that I could possibly make contact with.  The experience of pursuit has been enlightening and also emotional.  Fear and anxiety play tug of war in my… Continue reading Girl Gone Noticed

Just Another Day After Work

I’m currently sitting in Panera, awaiting the arrival of my soup and salad.  The perfect combination for an early fall evening.  Although it feels more like winter with the first visitation of snow making its way to Cleveland, Ohio.   So often I write about the past; recent life events that have had an impact… Continue reading Just Another Day After Work

Super Moms

She walked into our very professional business meeting, one kid on her hip, the other, hand-in-hand.  I was sitting attentively listening as the speaker effortlessly communicated the vast array of financial services we would be providing to our clients.  My trusty Mac at my feet, just in case I got the urge to type out… Continue reading Super Moms

Ready. Set. Leap…

I had this great epiphany today that I’m in transition.  For the last 6 months I’ve been growing out my relaxer and slowly joining the “natural hair movement”.  For the uniformed, this movement consists of African American women letting go of chemically processing their hair and opting to don their natural and coily locks.  In… Continue reading Ready.
