In the Secret Place

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

How quickly we forget the lessons Christ has taught us in the past.  The lessons of faith and trust.  That we can trust Him no matter what.  Within days I seemed to have forgotten that I was waiting at the bus stop with Jesus.  Both spiritual and natural seasons of winter began to weigh on me as I endured the short days and long nights.  I desired to meet Him in the morning but my body chose sleep instead.  God heard the desire of my heart and had mercy on me this morning.  Around 3:30 am after I tossed and turned and tried my hardest to get back to sleep, I gave in and got on my knees.

And nothing else mattered.

All that mattered was that I was His. I am His.  He flooded my soul with love and warmth surpassing that of the cold outside my window.  I buried my head inside His bosom and was at rest.  Just like John with Jesus (John 13:22-24).  And then I was reminded that the greatest gift in this season of my life is time with Him.  Quality time.  Serious time.  With Him.  And not to take that for granted.  Because it’s rare and precious and worth so much.

I’m rare and precious and worth so much.

And so are you.

Let’s be intentional and proactive about going to that secret place.  Let’s not take for granted that it will always be there.  Because then, we won’t frequent it as often as we were intended to.

  1. You are speaking to me! Obedience is so difficult when it wages war with sleep! I struggle to consistently bring my body into submission to prayer when i get the urge and unction to be with God… But when i obey that urge (even in the middle of the night) those are the greatest times i share with Jesus.

  2. Jesus just loves speaking in the dead of night, LOL probably because He’s the only one awake! So glad you were ministered to in this post. My quiet times have not been consistent like they have been in seasons past and I know the key is being INTENTIONAL. It’s easy to blow off God because, let’s face it…He isn’t going anywhere. But neglecting fellowship with Him only results in harming us (resulting in emotional, mental and relational imbalances). I really believe those quiet times are more for us than Him, although I think He loves them even more than we do 🙂

  3. I understand what you mean. A senior minister taught me that I should always get up and pray if I’m having difficulty sleeping. He said the Lord has a word for me and wants to share it during that time. I take the opportunity to intercede for others and listen for my instructions when that happens…

  4. Sounds like that minister had some senior wisdom 🙂 I’m blessed to know there are those who think so much of others to be in intercession for them in the dead of night! I’m sure I’ve reaped the reward for that type of obedience from God’s body many times without even knowing it. That is the beauty of intercession, it is behind the scenes, yet so powerful. Please take this as a compliment, even though we’ve never met, I do feel you remind me of my father! LOL, He is a very smooth and polished man who loves Jesus. Every time I see your name, I think of him, LOL…as It makes me think of being “smooth and polished” 🙂
